Non surgical wrinkle reduction treatments with Botulinum toxin (Botox®) and Dermal Fillers

It is important to have an initial consultation at which time clients can discuss their desires and reservations. You will be listened to and analysed in order that realistic expectations can be discussed and more importantly that you can feel safe and informed before making any decisions. In this way treatment s are tailored for each individual. As with any medical procedure there will be a medical history check as well as information about all possible complications.

Reception staff at the beauty store will be happy to help you to arrange a consultation appointment. Should you be interested in some more literature on the products themselves please ask and we will send this to you. Don’t forget to ask about any current specials offers!

Treatments are provided with include Botulinum Toxin (Botox®, vistabel) and Dermal Fillers (Juvederm ultra).

Depending on the individual these tiny injections are used separately or in combination to semi-permanently reduce or remove the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and to subtly enhance and accentuate existing facial features to create a more youthful look. I believe subtlety is the key. You know it’s right when your friends notice you looking well and fresh faced but can’t work out why!

Botulinum Toxin

The popularity of these tiny injections has increased significantly over the last decade.

Botulinum toxin is a protein which works by blocking the nerve impulses which cause muscles to contract and cause lines on the face. With the correct injection technique and in the correct doses it can be used to smooth out or completely remove wrinkles semi-permanently. Knowledge of complex facial anatomy is essential for its success and in this way certain areas of the face can be given a “lift” to achieve a more youthful look. An example of this would be to widen the eye area a little by subtly raising the eyebrows.

Patient selection is extremely important for obtaining optimum results. The treatment works best for patients between  30-50 who are beginning to see the signs of ageing. These injections work great with lines of the face in motion or expression lines. They are less successful with lines on the face when it’s at rest and in these cases a combination of botox and dermal fillers would be considered.

The areas most commonly treated and with greatest success are the lines on the upper half of our faces:

Frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet are by far the most common.

Smokers lines above the lips and nasal scrunch or “bunny” lines are also popular and effectively treated. Duration: Botox takes 2-3 days before you notice the effects. The full effect of the treatment is achieved by 2 weeks. The beneficial results typically last for 4-6 months or longer (up to about a year after several repeated treatments of Botox). The actual treatment itself takes only 15-30 minutes to perform.

Dermal Filler (Juvederm Ultra) for Facial Rejuvenation

If you're looking to enhance your natural looks by restoring your skin's volume, creating softness, and revitalising your appearance, then dermal fillers can be ideal.

The development of dermal fillers has added an exciting dimension to the world of cosmetic medicine.

Dermal fillers are gel-like materials which can be injected into the skin to fill out a wrinkle or fold or to create more youthful, attractive facial contours for example in our cheeks and lips. I treat patients with juvederm ultra which is the most evolved filler to date and contains a local anaesthetic ensuring treatments are as comfortable as possible.

Juvederm consists of hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule which exists naturally in the skin and is responsible for giving skin the natural volume it has in youth. As we grow older our supplies of this molecule diminish and so we lose volume and elasticity in our skin. Juvederm is used to help restore this loss.

Almost any wrinkle or fold can be filled and smoothed out with juvederm effectively however to achieve the best results the volume and contour of the whole face is considered and various techniques are used to volumise certain areas which are falling over time and actually causing the folds like the cheeks for example. As this is a naturally occurring substance in our body already there is no need for skin tests unlike older collagen products.. Also the results last significantly longer with juvederm lasting up to one year in some cases.

The volume of filler which needs to be injected is determined by many factors such as your age, the depth of your wrinkles, the degree of volume loss and what you want to achieve. This will all be discussed at your consultation.

Dermal fillers are usually very safe and immediately effective. In general most side effects are relatively minor, short lived and uncommon in experienced hands. Duration: Effects usually last about 6-9 months. Most clients choose to have a follow up treatment at around 6-12 months.

Most common areas to be treated are:

Marionette lines - These are the lines which fold downwards from the corners of our lips towards our chins as we age, the ones that patients say make them look sad when their face is at rest.

Nasolabial lines - These are the long lines which run downwards from our nostrils to the corners of our lips and deepen with age.

Lip enhancement procedures - It is important to point out that lip enhancement does not mean the “ducky” look which we have all seen in the media so many times. In the 90’s bigger lips were in fashion but at the moment we are back to a more natural look.

Patients who request lip enhancement procedures generally fall in to two categories:

The first group is mainly younger patients who simply want to add a little volume to their pout. The whole lip line is not enhanced, just the red part of the lip under the cupid’s bow and so the effect is not overdone or obvious in any way.

The second is the older group who wish to restore some volume, usually to their top lip which has become thinner over time. As the top lip flattens the cupid’s bow loses definition and this slowly causes the corners of the mouth to droop downwards almost to create a sad expression as mentioned above. In a lip rejuvenating procedure we therefore not only focus on the volume loss, but also focus on reshaping at the corners of the mouth creating the illusion of a lip lift.
